Jadon Sancho is not playing for Borussia Dortmund vs Man City but was left disappointed by the referee’s first-half showing
Jadon Sancho took to Twitter to question referee Ovidiu Hategan following his controversial decision to disallow a Borussia Dortmund goal against Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s side were leading 1-0 thanks to Kevin De Bruyne ‘s first-half strike but were let off the hook when Hategan blew his whistle when Jude Bellingham was about to tap the ball into an empty net.
The teenager had closed down Ederson and pinched the ball ahead of the Manchester City goalkeeper, who kicked Bellingham in the process.
The referee instantly blew for a foul on Bellingham as the youngster was about to tuck the ball home, meaning the VAR couldn’t intervene or review the incident and, to add insult to injury, Bellingham was also booked.
Replays clearly proved Dortmund’s 17-year-old won the ball before Ederson and the goal should have stood.
Taking to social media, Sancho wrote: “This Ref needs checking!”
Similarly, Dortmund’s official English Twitter account posted a tweet with a series of question marks, clearly baffled by the decision.
Had the referee allowed Bellingham to put the ball in the net before blowing for a foul on Ederson, the VAR could have reviewed the incident and advised the official to allow the goal.
It was the second controversial moment of the match, with Emre Can booked for fouling Rodri in the penalty area, only for VAR to overrule the decision. However, despite the foul being overturned, Can remained cautioned.
